The Importance of Respirator Machine

!9# The Importance of Respirator Machine

Respirator machine is a machine that can be used to help someone breathe. This machine is usually found in intensive care units in hospitals, nursing homes and also rehabilitation centers. There are also available in various models that can be used at home. These models are usually for those who have chronic conditions. The smaller portable machines can be used by those who do not need to be confined to a bed.

Identification

If you find someone who cannot breathe unassisted, he will need to be placed on a respirator machine. This kind of machines artificially breathes for you and will take over the work of the lungs.

Set Up

A plastic tube will run from the machine and it is inserted in the nose of the patient or mouth. The tube will continue down through the windpipe and into the lungs. If the patient needs to be on the respirator in long term, then an incision is made in the trachea so the tube will be inserted directly into the windpipe.

Types

Most machines monitor the patient. If the patient takes a breath the machine is idle. But if he does not take a breath on his own, the machine initiates a breath for him. Other machines can be set to be automatically delivering breaths at a rate set by a medical professional.

Process

A respirator machine uses pressurized air that can be used to blow oxygen into the lungs when the patient is unable to inhale enough air in on his own. Sometimes the patient is able to breathe out on his own and in other cases the machine will help with exhalation too.

Exchange of Gases

The respirator machine will also process the blood gases by supplying the right level of oxygen and removing carbon dioxide. A medical team will monitor the progress of the patient in order to make sure that there is the right balance of gases in the blood to avoid complications. The airflow of the respirator can be adjusted if needed.

Benefits

The function of the respirator is to support life either for a short period such as during surgery, or for longer periods in those that are seriously ill. Ventilators will not cure breathing problems. When you are able, your medical team will help you to wean off the machine and help you learn to breathe on your own again. The great point is that this machine will give you more advantages.

What You Need to Know About CPAP Machine Side Effects

Continuous Positive Air Pressure, or CPAP machines can be of great help to those who suffer from sleep apnea. But while they can improve the quality of sleep and relieve some of the frightening symptoms of sleep apnea, they can be uncomfortable at first, and there are side effects of using the devices.

The air in a CPAP machine can be very dry. In some people this causes the respiratory passages to react, and these reactions can include sneezing, irritation, or a dripping nose. If your machine is able to humidify the air, this will help immensely. If your machine does not have the option of humidifying the air and you experience irritation and even nosebleeds, then you may be best off finding a machine that has the ability to humidify the air you're breathing.

Sinus pressure and headaches can result if you use your CPAP machine when you have a cold, allergies, or flu. That's because respiratory blockages will prevent the pressure in your sinuses and eustachian tubes from equalizing properly. You may need to temporarily halt use of the device (if your doctor approves) or use medications to relieve the cold or flu symptoms to avoid this side effect.

Many users who are new to the CPAP machine may feel claustrophobic at first. You may have to use it for brief periods and increase the duration you use it each night. Make sure that the straps are not holding the mask on too tight. Some people find relief by using the CPAP machine while awake for a while before bedtime in order to get used to the sensations and the feeling of wearing the mask. For people who find the claustrophobic feelings unbearable may find relief from prescription anti-anxiety drugs.

One side effect that you should be able to fix with some help is a mask that loses pressure. This usually means that the mask doesn't fit properly. Fortunately, masks are available in many different shapes, from those that cover most of the face to those that cover only the nostrils. You may have to try out several different masks before finding one that works best for your particular face shape. This is particularly true for men who wear facial hair.

CPAP machines can literally be life savers for people who suffer from sleep apnea. It is important that if your doctor has prescribed use of one of these machines, that you do what you can to cope with the side effects it can cause. That way you'll be less likely to remove the machine during the night and will be more likely to experience the benefits to your health and your sleep quality that these machines are designed for.

Apnea Devices: A Review

!9# Apnea Devices: A Review

Sleep or night apnea is one of the most common sleep disorders today. The reasons sleeper's apnea is becoming more prevalent are simple; as a society, we are generally overweight and do not maintain good sleep habits.

Sleep disorders like apnea and chronic snoring during sleep are caused by a blocked airway during sleep. The soft palette blocks the back of the throat cutting off the airway. This causes mild to severe snoring. In severe cases of obstructive sleep apnea, a person breathing actually stops- a very dangerous health condition.

It is not a good idea to simply live with snoring or sleep apnea. If you are suffering from these conditions, you are not getting healthy sleep - and the oxygen deprivation caused by snoring and is very hard on your internal organs, particularly your heart. The cells of your organs - like the muscle cells in your heart need oxygen to stay healthy.

Depriving your body of oxygen during the night is bad for sleep and bad for the health of your internal organs. This is the number one reason that you should not ignore snoring and sleep apnea. Fortunately, there are sleep apnea devices that can really help.

There are many sleep apnea devices that can be used to treat the symptoms of sleep apnea and chronic snoring. A CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure machine (sometimes called an apnea machine) provides continuous positive air flow through the use of a pressurized mask. A CPAP device cannot be purchased without a prescription from a doctor, but is a good treatment for sleep apnea.

A device that works for some is the chin strap, or snoring strap - a device that is worn over the jaw and keeps the jaw pulled forward and forces the sleeper to breathe though the nose. The theory is that this keeps the airway open. While the effectiveness of this device is questionable, it does seem to work for some.

Another device that some find helpful is a back pillow - a device that you wear on your back that prevents you from sleeping on your back - you must sleep on your side or stomach. This type of device may be somewhat effective, but surely are not very comfortable and would not appeal to most sleepers.

A snore pillow, or apnea pillow is a good, first-try type of apnea device that can really help in the treatment of sleep apnea, for those with mild to moderate apnea. The pillows work by adjusting the position of the head to minimize the blocking of the airway. The sleep apnea pillow devices come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can really help those suffering from mild to moderate snoring and / or sleep apnea.

Snore pillows are made of memory foam, and typically have a dished or curved shape that cradles the head in a straight alignment - this helps to keep the airway open and minimize the symptoms of sleep apnea and /or heavy snoring while you sleep.

There are many devices available that will minimize the effects of sleeper's apnea or being a snorer. For your good health, it is important that you take action to get better sleep and keep yourself healthy.
